DESCRIPTION

Atorvastatin belongs to a group of medicines known as statins, which are lipid (fat) regulating medicines. Atorvastatin works by slowing the production of cholesterol in the body to decrease the amount of cholesterol that may build up on the walls of the arteries and block blood flow to the heart, brain, and other parts of the body.

INDICATION AND USAGE

Atorvastatin is indicated in lowering lipid levels and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease including myocardial infarction and stroke.

DOSAGE

Before starting treatment, doctor will place you on a low-cholesterol diet, which you should maintain also during therapy with Atorvastatin. The usual starting dose of Atorvastatin is 10 mg once a day in adults and children aged 10 years or older. The maximum dose of Atorvastatin is 80 mg once a day. Atorvastatin can be taken at any time of day, with or without food.

CONTRAINDICATION

Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to it, or if you have liver failure or cirrhosis. This medicine can cause the breakdown of muscle tissue, which can lead to kidney failure. Call your doctor right away if you have unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness especially if you also have fever, unusual tiredness, or dark urine.
